FudStar

The objective of this project is to design a food delivery app for a local restaurant. I completed this project in 4 Months.
Tools used: Figma
My role: UX Designer designing an app for Fudstar from conception to delivery.

Introduction

Fudstar is a local restaurant located in Lagos, Nigeria. Fudstar focuses on delivering freshly made dishes to users in a flexible manner. Fudstar targets busy workers and other people who don’t have time to make their own meals or order food during busy hours of the day

Goal

Design an app for for Fudstar that allows users to easily order food and choose a convenient delivery schedule.

Target Audience

My target audience are busy workers, business owners and people who cannot make their own meals due to busy schedules, lack of interest or skills required.

Key Challenges

My key challenges during this project were lack of adequate funds and budget constraints. Anther challenge I faced was finding people with accessibility challenges for interviews and usability studies.

Research

User Journey Map

In order to understand the pain points of the users, and the opportunities for addressing users needs, I created a user journey from my observational and secondary research. This helped me understand the steps customers took to accomplish tasks and identify how to make this journey easier for users to meet their goals.

Journey Map

Findings

The existing products weren't flexible enough to meet the needs of busy customers. They didn't offer features that allowed users to order food ahead and schedule delivery for a later time or day. They also lacked features that allowed users to check the status of their orders or track them.

Competitive Audit

I conducted a competitive audit of other products in the market in order to indentify their successes as well as their weak points. This helped me to identify opportunities to make more improved products for users.

Ideation

Paper sketch

During the ideation phase i drew paper sketches that would later be transformed into wireframes. These sketches contained different ideas of how the app would look and I finally chose one that represented the user needs the most for wireframing.

Refined Home Screen

This is the refined version of the home screen for the food delivery app that I chose to be transfered to a digital wireframe.

Digital Wireframes

Home Screen

The search bar element can help users easily search for specific items rather than browsing through long menus. The popular slide menu displays items users frequently order so that they can quickly add them to their order.

Delivery Scheduling

The delivery scheduling feature addresses users needs of ordering food in advance to be delivered later without the need for the users interrupting the busy schedule to order food busy hours of the day.

Low-Fidelity Prototype

This is a flow of the low-fidelity prototype from my digital wireframes. Access the prototype here: Low-Fi

Usability Study

I conducted two usability studies involving five participants in each study in order to test the prototype and identiy user painpoints. In the course of the study, the five participants were interviewd and asked to perform certain tasks.

Goal of the study:

  1. Find out if the app was easy to use;
  2. Find out what users liked or disliked about the app.

Findings

  1. Users wanted more payment options
  2. Users wanted more identifiable icons
  3. Users wanted navigation labels
  4. Users wanted other delivery options enabled
  5. Users wanted to browse menu in categories

High-Fidelity Prototype

High-Fidelity Itirated

After making iterations on the low fidelity prototypes, I created mockups and used it to create High-Fidelity prototype where the final iterations were done after the second usability study was conducted.

Accessibility Considerations

  • I included icons in order to aid navigation for users.
  • Motions and gestures were added to navigation in order to give users a better and organic interaction with the prototype.
  • Alternative texts were added for screen readers to aid users with visual impairments.

Take Aways

Impact

The app makes users feel ordering food can be so easy and stress-free.

One quote from peer feedback:

"The app is easy to use and the functions are simple. I don't dislike anything."

What I learned

While designing the Fudstar app, I learned that users will always come first in every aspect of design. Usability studies and feedbacks influenced the design choices and iterations made on the app.

Next Steps

  • Conduct another round of usability studies to validate whether the pain points users experienced have been effectively addressed.

  • Make further iterations on the app based on the outcome of the usability studies.

  • Conduct more research to identify any new areas of user needs and ideas on improvement or development of new features.
